Winter Hiking and Camping Gear

Learning about and understanding all the gear required to hike and camp safely and comfortably in the winter can seem like a daunting task, I know it was for me. To help you make sense of some of the many choices and decisions you need to make when acquiring the necessary gear, Gordon and I have created this page.

Below we have laid out all those items that Gordon and I are likely to pack on a typical overnight winter camping trip. By clicking on most items in the picture below a pop up window will come up with a close-up picture and a detailed description of the item. Some items can be further clicked on to show different styles, variations, or types of that particular item.

It goes without saying that understanding and purchasing the right gear will not help you if you do not know how to use it. Although this page serves to help you better understand the gear you will need in the back country, it is not intended to be a substitute to learning about its use from an experienced hiker prior to using it on your own.

We hope you find this page useful and helpful. As it is a new development to the site, your feedback would be most appreciated, please let us know what you think by contacting me at bob@winterhiking.org.
